Burro wrestlers win big in Casselton

A huge win.
Hillsboro won its 14th dual match this season — a match that ended in a tie on the mat.
On the road in Casselton, the Burros eked out a win over the Central Cass Squirrels. Knotted at 33, the tie was broken by criteria at the scorer’s table. Both teams had seven wins but Hillsboro had more pins, 4 to 3.
“This was definitely the funnest dual of the season for us, a huge win,” said coach Eric Ptacek. “Anytime you win a dual on the road, short-handed when the other team is at full strength, is fun. The fans got their money’s worth and made it even better.” (more…)

Hillsboro rolled over three District 3 opponents this week, improving to 7-2 in the district and 11-4 overall.
The Burros beat Thompson, 47-41, Tuesday; MayPort-CG, 45-32, Saturday; and Griggs County Central, 71-46, last Thursday.
Dakota Prairie played in the Hillsboro Events Center last night (Thursday) in a showdown of two of the district’s top three teams. The 13-2 DP Knights came into the game with a league leading 6-0 record. The Burros are at Central Valley (tonight) Friday and at Larimore next Thursday (Feb. 1) as the regular season winds down for coach Kyle Morehart’s team. (more…)

3-class plan for basketball, VB back on the table
January 26, 2007 · 1 Comment

In the latest plan to overhaul North Dakota high school basketball and volleyball, Hillsboro will remain a Class B school.
But the landscape for the two winter sports played in the Red River Valley and across the state will most certainly be changed if the latest proposal by the state’s Interscholastic Athletic Administrators Association is given the stamp of approval at a NDIAAA spring meeting and in a vote of all North Dakota High School Activities Association member schools this fall.
If accepted by a majority of schools in the state, the plan for a three-class system in basketball and volleyball will be implemented at the start of the 2009-2010 school year. (more…)

Valley reaction not positive

Sports fans in Hillsboro aren’t giving the three-class system proposed by the state athletic directors association much of a chance of making it to the gym on time, let alone getting to the three state tournaments the NDIAAA wants to see staged and played.
Scheduled to begin during the 2009-2010 school year, the three classes planned for basketball and volleyball are designed to give all schools the opportunity to play in a state tournament.
Which they have now, say detractors to the NDIAAA plan that will be addressed again at an April meeting of the state association. The plan, if still on the table as the year progresses, will be put to a vote of all schools in October. (more…)

Burro wrestlers on the mend before going back on the road
January 19, 2007 · No Comments

Hillsboro wrestlers maintained a busy close-to-home schedule the past 10 days — four home duals and a tournament at the neighbors’ gym.
With a win over Larimore Tuesday and a loss to Oakes last Friday, the short-handed Burros found limited success at the 33rd annual MayPort CG Invite last Saturday.
Only one Burro claimed an individual crown — 140-pounder Anthony Von Ruden. The junior held a perfect 24-0 record going into Thursday’s dual against Cavalier.
“He’s under a lot of pressure to win right now,” HHS coach Eric Ptacek said. “Hopefully he’s thinking about how bad he is going to beat someone instead of ‘what if he gets beat’.” (more…)

On Thursday, the CV girls battled the Burros in Hillsboro. The Burros kept the Valiants’ lead scorer, Dani Schultz, to 9 points. The Valiants’ defense could not stop the 6 foot senior Ashley Haines, who finished with 21 points. Final score: Hillsboro 59, Central Valley 32. Burros beaten by Falcons, Thunder
January 19, 2007 · No Comments
Mired in seventh place in the District 3 race, Hillsboro’s one win and two losses this week will likely keep the Burros trailing Dakota Prairie in the conference standings.
Winless Griggs County Central is at the bottom of the district standings.
Hillsboro, which beat Central Valley last Thursday night, was beaten by Moorhead Park Christian this week and Hatton-Northwood.
The 2-7 Burro boys basketball team will host MayPort-CG Saturday night at the Hillsboro Events Center. The Burros entertain Northern Cass Tuesday night.
The Burros were dropped by Hatton-Northwood, 51-35, Monday and Park Christian, 57-43, Tuesday. The two games were on the road. (more…)

Hillsboro’s two basketball teams swept Central Valley last Thursday night in a doubleheader at the Events Center.
The Burro girls beat the C-V Valiants, 59-32, behind 21 points by Ashley Haines.
The boys’ high school basketball team stopped the Valiants, 52-40, behind 17 points by sophomore Jamie Horne.
Kyle Morehart and Elliot Rotvold, Hillsboro’s two varsity coaches, agreed the two wins were nice.
It was just the second win for Rotvold’s squad.
The Burro defense was effective in holding Central Valley to 40 points. Brandon Rakoczy scored 15 points but Dustin Brend and Aaron Delvo were held to 7 and 5 points, respectively. (more…)
