Five state placewinners and a Top 10 finish as a team in the state wrestling tournament made Hillsboro’s coaches happy — and anxious for next season.
While the Burros left their mark on this year’s state tournament Feb. 15 -17 in Fargo, the young team also whetted its appetite to return as a force next season.
With 10 qualifiers, the Burros achieved two team goals — finishing in the Top 10 in the individual competition and making an appearance in the team dual contest.
With a very young roster — nine of 17 athletes are freshmen or younger — the Burros showed promise for seasons to come. (more…)

Hillsboro’s return to the Region 2 girls basketball tournament was brief.
One game, in fact.
But the Burros had company returning home after losing out in the first round of the region played at the Betty Engelstad Sioux Center in Grand Forks.
Hatton-Northwood and MayPort-CG were also beaten Monday. Dakota Prairie was sent packing Tuesday following the Knights’ semi-final loss to Fordville-Lankin-Park River, the team that eliminated Hillsboro Monday night.
District 3 took it on the chin this year. (more…)

Hillsboro wins final 2 games

February 23, 2007 · No Comments

Hillsboro broke a three-game losing streak this week by winning its final two games on the regular season schedule.
The Burros beat Norman County West Monday and the Larimore Polar Bears three nights earlier in the Hillsboro Events Center.
Norman County West was beaten 44-41 at Halstad and Larimore was edged 35-33 last Friday.
The 7-12 Burros open the District 3 boys basketball tournament later today (Friday). Hillsboro meets Thompson in the final opening round game at the Lewy Lee Fieldhouse at approximately 6:45 p.m.
Hillsboro held a commanding 30-19 lead at halftime against the Norman County West Panthers.
Missed shots allowed the Panthers back in the game late in the game, but free throws down the stretch by the Burros secured the win. A 3-point shot by NCW at the buzzer made it a 3-point game. (more…)

After claiming a spot in the state dual tournament, Hillsboro’s wrestling team earned three Region 2 individual championships and qualified seven more wrestlers for the state tournament this weekend in Fargo.
At the region tournament last Saturday in Carrington, Burro coaches were hoping 10 of their 13 competitors would earn berths in the state meet — and 10 did.
“We had a great tournament,” said coach Eric Ptacek. “We thought we had a good chance of qualifying anywhere from eight to 10 and we ended up getting 10. That is great!” (more…)

Valiant girls season ends, boys prepare for district

February 16, 2007 · No Comments

Although Hillsboro put an end to the Central Valley’s girl’s basketball season at the District 3 tournament last Tuesday, the boys still have two games left before districts next Friday. They were scheduled to play the Hatton-Northwood Thunder on Thursday and Northern Cass on Friday, two teams the Valiants have not played yet this season.
The boys are still striving to put an end to their four-game losing streak, most recently having lost to Thompson last Tuesday by 30 points. Jason Novacek, usually a double-digit scorer, was held to only 6 points in the game. Central Valley’s point leader was Aaron Delvo with 13. Thompson was led by Casey Nelson with 21. The first time the Valiants played Thompson back in January the boys lost by 19 points. Final score: Thompson 73, Central Valley 43.
