Knights claim district title with win over H-N Thunder

Dakota Prairie outscored Hatton-Northwood 13-2 in the final quarter Tuesday to defeat the Thunder, 45-44, and capture the District 3 tournament championship.
In the two region qualifying games, Hillsboro edged Central Valley in two overtimes to win 75-64 and MayPort-CG slipped by Thompson 43-38 in overtime. Hillsboro’s last region appearance was in 1988.
The four District 3 teams will square off against District 4’s qualifying teams in the Region 2 tournament, starting Monday at The Betty in Grand Forks.
Hatton-Northwood plays Midway-Minto in Monday’s opening game at 3 p.m. MPCG meets Drayton-St. Thomas in the second game at 4:30 p.m. Dakota Prairie and Grafton play in Game 3 at 6 p.m. with Hillsboro and Fordville-Lankin-Park River playing in the final quarterfinal round game at 7:30 p.m. The tourney continues Tuesday and Thursday nights.
Drayton-St. Thomas beat Fordville-Lankin-Park River, 58-46 in the District 4 title game Tuesday. Midway-Minto, Region 2’s title team last year, stopped Grafton, 48-38, in the third place game.
Dakota Prairie advanced to Tuesday’s championship game in Mayville with wins over Griggs County Central and MPCG. Hatton-Northwood swept into the final game by beating Larimore and Hillsboro.
Hillsboro’s Burros whipped Thompson, 46-32, in the first round Saturday. The Burros were stopped 61-52 by the H-N Thunder Monday in one of the district tournament’s better-played games.
The MPCG Patriots beat Central Valley Saturday and Thompson to qualify for the Region 2 tournament.
Three district teams were ranked in the statewide Class B media poll before this week’s tournament.
Hatton-Northwood, with only one loss before Tuesday’s game with Dakota Prairie, was ranked No. 4 in the power poll. Dakota Prairie and Hillsboro shared the No. 9 slot with Dickinson Trinity, Fordville-Lankin-PR and LaMoure.
The Knights, Thunder and Burros, along with the FLPR Flyers are still in the mix.
The Midway-Minto Mustangs lost to the Bottineau Stars in the 2006 State Class B championship game.
