Hillsboro wins final 2 games

February 23, 2007 · No Comments

Hillsboro broke a three-game losing streak this week by winning its final two games on the regular season schedule.
The Burros beat Norman County West Monday and the Larimore Polar Bears three nights earlier in the Hillsboro Events Center.
Norman County West was beaten 44-41 at Halstad and Larimore was edged 35-33 last Friday.
The 7-12 Burros open the District 3 boys basketball tournament later today (Friday). Hillsboro meets Thompson in the final opening round game at the Lewy Lee Fieldhouse at approximately 6:45 p.m.
Hillsboro held a commanding 30-19 lead at halftime against the Norman County West Panthers.
Missed shots allowed the Panthers back in the game late in the game, but free throws down the stretch by the Burros secured the win. A 3-point shot by NCW at the buzzer made it a 3-point game.
“We missed some wide open shots in the second half that would have finished the game,” said Burro coach Elliot Rotvold. “Instead we gave them hope.
“It was a good win and one we wanted going into the district tourney.”
The Burros welcomed back junior Jake Olsen in the NCW victory. Olson, who broke his ankle early in the season, missed seven weeks and 15 games.
The 5-10 junior finished with 10 points while playing around 16 minutes.
Jamie Horne led all scorers with 18 points.
Aaron Meyer made 11 points and Horne 10 in the close win over Larimore.
“We played well against Larimore,” said Rotvold. The Burros controlled the game at both ends of the court, said the Burro coach.
The Burros had been playing good basketball against the better teams in the district, but were still losing.
“It was a confidence boost to beat one of the top five teams instead of just staying close,” Rotvold explained.
Ben Gordon and Keith Asheim played their last game before the hometown fans. The two seniors each scored 5 points.
“It was good to see Ben and Keith finish with good games at home,” said Hillsboro’s coach.
“Jamie and Aaron again shot the ball well and got us the offensive production we needed.”
The Larimore win Friday assured the Burros of the sixth seed in the district tourney starting today in Mayville.
