HHS runner Kiley Coles single-handedly placed 12th as a girls’ Class B team in the state high school track meet May 25-26 in Bismarck.
The junior competed and placed in four events — 2nd in the 1600 meters (5:19.44), 3rd in both the 800 (2:21.07) and 3200 (11:23.00) and 6th in the 400 (1:01.44). Athletes from more than 70 Class B girls teams took part in the state meet; forty-one teams scored. Hillsboro/Coles scored 23 points. Benson County won the title with 94.5 points.
Seven Burro tracksters qualified for state and endured cold, windy and wet weather at the Community Bowl.
Coles had also qualified in the 3200 relay. Her teammates — Maggie and Joelle Evenson, Calli Lemm and Rachel Meyer — ran the race. The four underclassmen clocked a time of 11:01.76 but did not place.
Senior Megan Mueller ran the 100 meter dash. Her time in the preliminaries was a strong 0:12.83. Running into a stiff wind in the finals, Mueller placed 9th (0:13.97). The winner managed a time of 0:13.17.
On the boys side, HHS junior Billy Otto competed in the 1600 meters. His time of 4:56.36 wasn’t good enough to place in the top eight.
