— The color combination of Hillsboro’s Sports Calendars and pocket sports schedules circulating in the weeks before the start of the 2007-2008 year in Burro athletics.
The pocket schedules, sponsored again this year by Wells Fargo and The Erickson Agency, have been in distribution now for a number of weeks.
The larger sports calendars, designed by the Hillsboro Banner, were made available this week.
Students registering Tuesday and Thursday were given a sample of each sports calendar.
Businesses were supplied with the calendars earlier this week.
The arrival and distribution of the sports calendars every fall tells everyone, “It’s that time again,” according to Neil Nelson, Banner editor.
“People see the sports calendars and they know, football has to be starting soon and volleyball can’t be too far away,” said Nelson.
“And again this year, the sports fan is excited.”
Hillsboro, Nelson reminds sports fans, reached the post-season in football last year, and the Burros won the Class B volleyball state championship.
The Burro wrestling team was better than respectable and the girls and boys basketball teams gave the opposition problems every night out, Nelson continued.
“It’s going to be another exciting, championship year in Burro sports,” Nelson promises.
“We’ve got some young athletes on each of the teams that will demand attention.”
Recognition will follow, he’s confident.
Multi-sport athletes like Jake Olsen, Jamie Horne and Aaron Meyer in football and basketball, Andrew Grothmann, Jake McLean and Anthony Von Ruden in football and wrestling will have sports fans across the region following Hillsboro’s fortunes, Nelson is sure.
In girls basketball, he said, Hillsboro has the Evenson sisters (Maggie and Joelle) and Ashley Doeden and Co. in volleyball promise entertaining and winning seasons.
“It’s going to be an exciting year.”
And kicking it all off again this year are the sports schedules and sports calendars.
The popular pocket schedules are available at The Erickson Agency, Wells Fargo, Olsen Hardware and the Banner.
The 17×24 and 9×12 sports calendars are available at the Banner.
A junior high year-long sports schedule was also printed again this year by the Banner.
A total of 56 local businesses sponsored the sports calendars this year.
