Hillsboro still undefeated; ranked 5th in state

September 21, 2007 · No Comments

Still undefeated and at the top of the Region 2 standings, the Hillsboro Burros welcome Barnes County North to town tonight.
It’s Hillsboro’s Homecoming.
The Bison bettåer beware.
Barnes County North, beaten 43-0 by the Burros last year, are winless in five games this year.
Hillsboro, meanwhile, is 3-0 in Region 2 play and 5-0 overall.
“The Bison will bring a very young, raw team to town Friday,” said HHS coach Mark Rerick.
“It will be important to put them away early.”
If the Burros, ranked 5th in the state again this week, allow the Bison to “hang around, they’ll give us some problems,” suggested Rerick.
Tempering a possible blowout is the news that Burro quarterback Aaron Meyer and running back Brian Smelden are injured and will miss tonight’s game.
The two key players are expected to be ready to play against Finley-Sharon-Hope-Page next Friday night. Meyer’s injured shoulder is waiting for MRI results. Back-up QB Josh Mayo will replace Meyer in the Burro backfield.
“We’ll be just fine with Josh running the show,” offered Rerick.
Sophomore Zach Grothmann will take over Smelden’s running plays. Mayo is also a sophomore.
Smelden will be 100 percent next week, assured the Burro coaches.
Despite the records and Hillsboro’s streak of unbeaten games, the Burros will have to play disciplined from the opening whistle, according to their coach.
Much is at risk, mainly the first place hold the Burros share with the F-S-H-P Spartans in the region.
