Region 2 lead on the line tonight At Finley

September 28, 2007 · No Comments

In a showdown of unbeatens, the Hillsboro Burros and Finley-Sharon-Hope-Page Spartans are putting the Region 2 lead and their perfect 9-man records on the line tonight in Finley.
Kickoff in the key region game is 7 p.m.
The Burros, ranked fourth in this week’s power poll, beat an over-matched Barnes County North team, 35-14, last Friday in recording their sixth straight win. The Spartans slipped past Richland, 28-26.
The Burros and Spartans are 4-0 in Region 2 and share the league lead.
A win will put the Burros in the driver’s seat in the region championship race, coach Mark Rerick knows. A win will also extend the Burros’ campaign into the post-season.
A loss, he said, would leave the Burros scrambling for one of four playoff berths waiting Region 2 this year.
“This game is huge.”
Finley-Sharon-Hope-Page is on a roll. The Spartans have beaten Richland, Griggs County, Hankinson, Barnes County North and Thompson.
The Burros will have to contain the Spartans’ James Ihry and Dillan Ostrom. “They’re two very solid offensive players,” said Rerick. “We’ll have to keep those two in front of us and try to eliminate them from making big plays.”
Ihry scored four touchdowns in F-S-H-P’s 52-12 rout of Griggs County Central two weeks ago.
Controlling the clock and the ball will be the keys to Hillsboro’s game plan.
John Thorson (5-10, 150), is the Spartan signal-caller.
Hillsboro beat Hope-Page, 50-14, last year. Finley-Sharon was in a football co-op with Griggs County in 2006.
Chad Kainz is the Spartan head coach. He was the Hope-Page coach for 11 years.
Andrew GrothmannAHillsboro’s 6-1, 210 lb. fullback, is the Burros’ leading rusher with 621 yards on 64 carries, a 9.7 yard average. He’s scored nine touchdowns in Hillsboro’s first six games.
Smelden is averaging 7.9 yards a carry. The senior running back has totaled 464 yards on the ground. Running the option offense, Aaron Meyer has 322 yards on 77 carries for a 4.2 average.
Sophomore Zach Grothmann, who was the Burro running back against Barnes County North last week, playing in place of the injured Brian Smelden, is the team’s leading defensive player. The 5-9, 147 lb. defensive back has 25 solo tackles. Andrew Grothmann, Jake McLean and Anthony VonRuden also have impressive defensive stats.
Andrew Grothmann and Bill Breen lead the team in quarterback sacks with three each.
