The No. 1 seed in this week’s District 3 girls volleyball tournament in Hillsboro will be the No. 3 seed in next week’s Region 2 tourney in Grafton.

The Hillsboro Burros, the regular season champs in District 3 and seeded No. 1 in the district tournament played this week in Hillsboro, were regulated to the consolation bracket when they were beaten by Central Valley, 3-0, Monday night at the Events Center.

The Burros bounced back Tuesday night, beating Griggs County Central, 3-0. The win gave the Burros an automatic bid in the Region 2 tournament starting Monday in Grafton.

The Burros face off against Cavalier Monday at 3 p.m. in the Grafton High School auditorium.

The Thompson Tommies beat Central Valley, 3-0, in the title match Tuesday night at the Events Center. The Tommies and Valiants also play Monday in Grafton. Mayville is the fourth District 3 team in the Region 2 tourney.

Thompson plays Grafton, MayPort-CG meets North Border and Central Valley faces off against Park River in the other three games in the opening round.

The tournament’s semifinal round will be played Tuesday night. The championship game is scheduled Thursday night.

The state volleyball tournament will be played Nov. 15-17 in Jamestown.

The defending state champion Burros will take their 21-13 record to Grafton.

Coach Jamie Rerick is telling her team to take one game at a time in the regional.

“We’ll see where it gets us.”

The team, said the Burro coach, is excited about making it to the regionals.

“It’s our focus now.”

The Burros were up and down in the recently completed District 3 tournament, according to the coach. Nerves played a role in the Central Valley loss, hinted the coach.

Hillsboro, which beat Larimore, 3-0, in the opening round game last Thursday, lost to Central Valley 20-25, 26-28 and 26-28.

Hillsboro beat Griggs County 25-11, 25-21 and 25-23.

Ashley Doeden and Mikkaela Toenies had 10 and 9 kills, respectively. Joelle Evenson was credited with 17 assists. Toenies had two serve aces in the Griggs County match.

No strangers to post season play, Hillsboro, Thompson and MPCG are each multiple winners at the district, region and state level.

The Burros won state in 2000 and again last year.
