Two shorthanded wrestling teams made short work of their opening season dual Tuesday.
Thanks to three pins and three forfeits in their favor, the visiting Hillsboro Burros edged MayPortCG 36-30. The Patriots settled for three pins and two forfeits. There were no matches at 125, 152 and 171 pounds.
“We knew it would be a quick dual,” said Burro coach Mark McLean of the 30-minute contest. “We were both open in a few weight classes. We anticipated a pretty close contest because of how we matched up.”
After the Patriots accepted a forfeit at 103 and earned a pin at 112, the Burros juggled their lineup to their advantage. Freshman Tyler Anderson racked up a pin in 1:11 at 119. MayPortCG responded with two more pins at 130 and 135. Hillsboro accepted forfeits at 140 and 145.
Sophomore Tanner Boeddeker bumped up to 160 lbs. and nailed a pin for the Burros in 2:30. Sophomore Garrett Burg added a first period pin at 189. The two teams traded forfeits at 215 and 285.
“I was pleased with our performance,” McLean said. It would have been nice to have had a few more matches but it’s early in the season and not many guys are wrestling at their ideal weight.”
The Burros will wrestle at home Thursday, hosting Carrington. The Cardinals opened their season Tuesday, losing 48-25 to Oakes.
“Carrington is somewhat down from what they’ve been in the past but we always manage to have a close, heated dual with them,” McLean commented.
“On Thursday, our line-up will be closer to the way we will be wrestling for the season,” coach McLean added.
The Burros host their 16th annual invitational tournament Dec. 1. Scheduled to wrestle are North Dakota teams from Central Cass, Cavalier, MayPortCG, North Border and West Fargo and Minnesota teams from Barnesville, Pelican Rapids and Lake Park - Audubon. Wrestling starts at 9 a.m. on three mats at the Hillsboro Events Center.
“It should be a fun, exciting day,” McLean said. “We will be competing against some strong teams from our region. Although it’s early, we will get an idea of what we may be up against later in the season.”
