Split leaves Burros at 5-10

In one of their better games of the year, Hillsboro beat Griggs County Central last Friday on the Burros’ home court only to play one of their poorer games three nights later in a 51-29 loss to Thompson at the Hillsboro Events Center.
The 5-10 Burros, who played Dakota Prairie at McVille last night, are at home tonight (Friday) against the Hatton-Northwood Thunder.
Hillsboro’s 29 points against the Tommies Tuesday night were the fewest scored in a game this year. Against the Cougars Saturday night, three players scored in double figures in the Burros’ 50-31 victory. (more…)

Burros boys rebound with win over Fordville-Lankin

The Hillsboro Burros rebounded from a disappointing loss at Central Valley last Friday with a productive win at Fordville Tuesday night.
The Burro boys basketball team whipped Fordville-Lankin, 71-42, behind 19 points from sophomore Aaron Meyer. Hillsboro’s other shooting sophomore, Jamie Horne, scored 15 against the Flyers.
Hillsboro lost 47-35 at Central Valley.
The split in the week’s action leaves the Burros at 1-5 in District 3 and 4-9 overall.
The Burros host Griggs County tonight at the Events Center and Thompson Tuesday night.
Factoring in the Fordville-Lankin win were the 40 free throws shot and 27 made by the Burros.
What didn’t count were the easy shots missed in the first half, admitted Rotvold.
“We played much better in the second half. It was a nice win, a lot of guys contributed in the scoring. We were much more aggressive against Fordville-Lankin.” (more…)

Valiant girls lose to MPCG, Hillsboro

The Central Valley Valiants went up against the MayPort-CG Patriots at home last Tuesday and suffered a disappointing 28-44 loss.
Sophomore Dani Schultz’s 13 points led the Valiant scoring. The Patriots’ Kelly Rygg’s 15 led all scorers.
On Thursday, the CV girls battled the Burros in Hillsboro. The Burros kept the Valiants’ lead scorer, Dani Schultz, to 9 points. The Valiants’ defense could not stop the 6 foot senior Ashley Haines, who finished with 21 points. Final score: Hillsboro 59, Central Valley 32. The 5-6 Valiants are scheduled to play Climax Fisher at Central Valley Saturday night. (more…)

Burros beaten by Falcons, Thunder

Mired in seventh place in the District 3 race, Hillsboro’s one win and two losses this week will likely keep the Burros trailing Dakota Prairie in the conference standings.
Winless Griggs County Central is at the bottom of the district standings.
Hillsboro, which beat Central Valley last Thursday night, was beaten by Moorhead Park Christian this week and Hatton-Northwood.
The 2-7 Burro boys basketball team will host MayPort-CG Saturday night at the Hillsboro Events Center. The Burros entertain Northern Cass Tuesday night.
The Burros were dropped by Hatton-Northwood, 51-35, Monday and Park Christian, 57-43, Tuesday. The two games were on the road. (more…)

Burros take 2 from Valiants

Hillsboro’s two basketball teams swept Central Valley last Thursday night in a doubleheader at the Events Center.
The Burro girls beat the C-V Valiants, 59-32, behind 21 points by Ashley Haines.
The boys’ high school basketball team stopped the Valiants, 52-40, behind 17 points by sophomore Jamie Horne.
Kyle Morehart and Elliot Rotvold, Hillsboro’s two varsity coaches, agreed the two wins were nice.
It was just the second win for Rotvold’s squad.
The Burro defense was effective in holding Central Valley to 40 points. Brandon Rakoczy scored 15 points but Dustin Brend and Aaron Delvo were held to 7 and 5 points, respectively. (more…)

Wolverines, Tommies stop Burros

On the road on back-to-back nights last week, Hillsboro lost to Thompson and Finley-Sharon-Hope-Page, dropping the Burros’ record to 1-5.
Playing without veteran Jake Olsen, the Burros were beaten 63-41 by Thompson Thursday and 46-22 by F-S-H-P Friday.
Hillsboro lost Olsen for the season when the junior broke his foot at practice over the holiday vacation.
The Burros, who played Central Valley last night at the Hillsboro Events Center, play at Hatton Monday and in Moorhead against Park Christian Tuesday night. (more…)

Broken foot takes Olsen out of lineup

The Burros lost more than the one game they played over the holiday break, a 57-48 loss to Ashby, Minn. in the Comet Classic.
Hillsboro will likely play the rest of the season without its most seasoned player.

Burros beat Tornadoes behind 19 points from Jamie Horne

Cavalier, an old nemesis of Hillsboro’s before the Burros clipped the Tornadoes twice two years ago, lost to the Burros Tuesday, 64-35, in Hillsboro’s second game of the season and the second home game.
The Burro victory avenged Hillsboro’s 45-42 loss to Cavalier last year.
Leading 22-17 at halftime in the Hillsboro Events Center, the Burros dominated the second half to win by 29 points. Junior Jamie Horne paced the victory with 19 points. (more…)

Burros beaten in season opener

A poor third quarter doomed Hillsboro Tuesday night in the Burros’ 52-38 loss to Central Cass.
Trailing 24-20 at halftime in the season and home-opener for the Burros, coach Elliot Rotvold’s team managed just five points in the pivotal third quarter. (more…)

Cavalier hurt by out-migration

Hillsboro’s opponent Tuesday night — Cavalier — lost players in the off-season, not to graduation but to out-immigration.
