Schedule in Burros’ favor

December 27, 2007 · No Comments

Moving slowly toward its January scheduled, where the Hillsboro Burro girls basketball team plays 10 games in 31 days, coach Kyle Morehart’s team has a good chance of taking a 500 or better record into the new year.

The 3-2 Burros, who played MayPort-CG last night in Hillsboro, meet the Griggs County Central Cougars tonight (Friday) in Cooperstown. The Burros are scheduled to play Norman County West next Thursday (Dec. 2) in the Comet Classic tournament at Mayville.

The MPCG Patriots and the GCC Cougars, both District 3 teams, are struggling this year.  (more…)

Hillsboro girls win 1, lose 1

December 7, 2007 · No Comments

Unstoppable against Oak Grove last Friday in Fargo, the Hillsboro Burros were stopped three nights later by Climax-Fisher, 59-45.

After winning their first two games convincingly, the Burros stumbled at Climax Monday night, losing by 14 to the Minnesota girls basketball co-op.

Three nights earlier in Fargo, Hillsboro did everything right in beating the Grovers 66-38.

The 2-1 Burros are playing tonight at Thompson. Their Dec. 4 game with Griggs County Central at Cooperstown, postponed because of Tuesday’s snow storm, was rescheduled for Dec. 21.

Coach Kyle Morehart’s team will be without the Evenson twins tonight against the Tommies. The girls, Maggie and Joelle, are involved in their brother’s wedding in Grand Forks today.

This will be a challenge for the team, Morehart admits.

He expects a competitive game.

Hillsboro plays at Hatton Dec. 14.

After playing “like a well-oiled machine” against the Grovers, the Burros lost their focus against Climax-Fisher, according to their coach.

“We were embarrassed, the way we played. Hopefully, we’ll learn from it.”

Four Burros scored in double figures against Oak Grove. Junior Ashley Doeden scored 18 points, Joelle Evenson 17, Katrina Meyer 15 and Brittany Wilson 10.

Doeden also led the team in rebounding.

“With Ashley playing so well in the post, it allowed us to get some open looks on the perimeter,” said Morehart. “The girls took advantage.

“We showed great balanced scoring, but the shots were falling.”

Hillsboro led 16-6 after the first quarter and 36-12 at the half.

The Burros tailed Climax-Fisher 26-19 at halftime. Meyer scored 15 points for the Burros. Wilson and Maggie Evenson added 10 each.

Kala Korynta had 12 points for C-F, which had four players scoring in double figures.

Despite first-game jitters that stayed with the Burros into the second half, Hillsboro won its first game of the 2007-2008 girls basketball season, defeating Central Cass, 56-42, Tuesday night in the Events Center.

The Evenson twins — Joelle and Maggie — each scored 15 points in the non-conference victory.

“It wasn’t pretty, but I was happy with the effort,” said the Burro coach Kyle Morehart.

Trailing 38-36 after three quarters, the Burros ran away with the game in the final quarter, out-scoring the Squirrels, 20-4, in the final 8  minutes of play.

“It took us two and a half quarters to get going,” added Morehart. “I felt much better in the fourth quarter, we finally opened things up in the open court.” (more…)

Burro girls open season Tuesday night

November 27, 2007 · No Comments

Returning three starters from last year’s 16-7 team, the Hillsboro Burro girls basketball team, which shared the District 3 regular season title last year with Hatton-Northwood and Dakota Prairie, are given an outside shot at the title this year.

The recently-published Miss Hoopster pre-season poll has the Burros trailing Dakota Prairie, Hatton-Northwood and Central Valley.

Hillsboro coach Kyle Morehart isn’t too concerned with the magazine’s annual pre-season picks.

He’s confident his team will be in the mix at the end of the season.  (more…)

Basketball seasons end for Valiants

March 9, 2007 · No Comments

Basketball season is over for Central Valley. The girls’ season came to an end two Saturdays ago at the district tournament.
The Valiants were locked in an intense battle against the Hillsboro Burros. The Valiants played their last game with heart, losing to the Burros in double-overtime.
On a positive note, coach Rick Sondrol and the 10 other girls will only have to say goodbye to one senior this year—Ronnika Smithee. Ashley Cedergren, Allison Lazur and Katie Kuster will be returning next season as the team’s seniors. On the negative, Smithee was a key player this season and will definitely be missed. (more…)

Hillsboro’s return to the Region 2 girls basketball tournament was brief.
One game, in fact.
But the Burros had company returning home after losing out in the first round of the region played at the Betty Engelstad Sioux Center in Grand Forks.
Hatton-Northwood and MayPort-CG were also beaten Monday. Dakota Prairie was sent packing Tuesday following the Knights’ semi-final loss to Fordville-Lankin-Park River, the team that eliminated Hillsboro Monday night.
District 3 took it on the chin this year. (more…)

Valiant girls season ends, boys prepare for district

February 16, 2007 · No Comments

Although Hillsboro put an end to the Central Valley’s girl’s basketball season at the District 3 tournament last Tuesday, the boys still have two games left before districts next Friday. They were scheduled to play the Hatton-Northwood Thunder on Thursday and Northern Cass on Friday, two teams the Valiants have not played yet this season.
The boys are still striving to put an end to their four-game losing streak, most recently having lost to Thompson last Tuesday by 30 points. Jason Novacek, usually a double-digit scorer, was held to only 6 points in the game. Central Valley’s point leader was Aaron Delvo with 13. Thompson was led by Casey Nelson with 21. The first time the Valiants played Thompson back in January the boys lost by 19 points. Final score: Thompson 73, Central Valley 43.
