Hillsboro, which hasn’t played in a regional girls basketball tournament in eight years, is returning to the second round of post-season play for the first time since 1998.
The Burros, coached by Kyle Morehart, play Fordville-Lankin-Park River Monday night in quarterfinal action of the Region 2 girls basketball tournament. The region tourney will be played at The Betty in Grand Forks, home to the University of North Dakota Fighting Sioux men’s and women’s basketball teams. (more…)

Hillsboro drops last game on schedule

Riding a six-game wining streak and ranked in the statewide media poll, the Hillsboro girls basketball team lost its last regular-season game Tuesday, losing to the Norman County West Panthers, 49-36, at the Hillsboro Events Center.
The 14-5 Burros, tied for first in the final District 3 standings and seeded third in this week’s tourney, play the Thompson Tommies in the final game of the first round Saturday.
Tip-off for the Hillsboro-Thompson game is scheduled for 5:15 p.m. at the Lewy Lee Fieldhouse on the Mayville State University campus.
Hillsboro, Dakota Prairie and Hatton-Northwood each finished the regular season schedule 12-2 in the district standings. Dakota Prairie was given the No. 1 seed. Hatton-Northwood was seeded second, after the names of the three schools were drawn from a hat. (more…)

Burro girls moving up

Hillsboro’s two victories this week gave the Burros a share of the District 3 lead for the first time this season.
The Burros also moved into this week’s Class B media poll in girls basketball, thanks in large part to Hillsboro’s 56-47 upset of Dakota Prairie last Thursday.
It was a good week for the Burros, who handed Central Valley a 75-42 defeat one night after they knocked off Dakota Prairie.
Hillsboro (9-2 district , 13-4 overall) was tied for ninth in the power poll with Dakota Prairie, Fordville-Lankin, LaMoure and Midway-Minto. Unbeaten New Salem (16-0) remains at the top of the poll.
Dakota Prairie’s loss last Thursday in Hillsboro was the Knights’ first defeat in district play.
It was also one of Hillsboro’s biggest wins of the year. (more…)

CV Girls lose to Wolverines, Burros; beat Thompson

Central Valley’s girls basketball went up against the Finley-Sharon-Hope-Page Wolverines for the first time this season last Monday only to come up 8 points short. After falling behind in the second quarter, the girls continued to be outscored by the Wolverines as time ran out.
Dani Schultz and Ronnika Smithee accounted for 34 of the Valiants 50 points. Final score: Wolverines 58, Valiants 50. (more…)

Hillsboro collects 3 more victories

Hillsboro rolled over three District 3 opponents this week, improving to 7-2 in the district and 11-4 overall.
The Burros beat Thompson, 47-41, Tuesday; MayPort-CG, 45-32, Saturday; and Griggs County Central, 71-46, last Thursday.
Dakota Prairie played in the Hillsboro Events Center last night (Thursday) in a showdown of two of the district’s top three teams. The 13-2 DP Knights came into the game with a league leading 6-0 record. The Burros are at Central Valley (tonight) Friday and at Larimore next Thursday (Feb. 1) as the regular season winds down for coach Kyle Morehart’s team. (more…)

The Central Valley Valiants went up against the MayPort-CG Patriots at home last Tuesday and suffered a disappointing 28-44 loss.
Sophomore Dani Schultz’s 13 points led the Valiant scoring. The Patriots’ Kelly Rygg’s 15 led all scorers.
On Thursday, the CV girls battled the Burros in Hillsboro. The Burros kept the Valiants’ lead scorer, Dani Schultz, to 9 points. The Valiants’ defense could not stop the 6 foot senior Ashley Haines, who finished with 21 points. Final score: Hillsboro 59, Central Valley 32. The 5-6 Valiants are scheduled to play Climax Fisher at Central Valley Saturday night. (more…)

Hillsboro girls win 4th straight

Hillsboro extended its winning streak to four games with wins this week over Northern Cass and Moorhead Park Christian.
The Burro girls beat Northern Cass, 59-52, Monday on the Jaguars’ home court and Park Christian, 71-48, Saturday night at the Hillsboro Events Center.
Hillsboro, which played Central Valley last night, is at Hatton-Northwood Saturday and at Griggs County Central next Thursday. (more…)

Haines 3rd Burro to score more than 1,000 points

Ashley Haines, Hillsboro’s 6 ft. senior center, is the third Burro girls basketball player to score 1,000 points.
Haines eclipsed the mark Saturday night, when she scored a career-high 34 points against Moorhead Park Christian.
A 30-point night at Northern Cass Monday leaves Haines with 1,040 points, second to Kinsey Coles’ 1,284. Anita Boeddeker is the third Burro to score more than 1,000 points. Boeddeker graduated in 1990. Coles wrapped up her career with the 1999-2000 season. (more…)

Burro girls riding 2-game win streak

Hillsboro’s girls basketball team greeted Christmas and the New Year, respectively, with wins over MayPort-CG and Fisher-Climax.
Clearly the better team in both games, the Burros showed coach Kyle Morehart what he’s been waiting to see from his veteran squad this year.
“Things are beginning to come around.” At times in the two most recent games, he admitted, the Burros played basketball like he knows they can. (more…)

Burros in search of rhythm, consistency

With their three-game winning streak stopped by Hatton-Northwood last Friday, Hillsboro’s girls basketball team hopes to enter the Christmas break with a .500 or better record.
The 3-3 Burros, who played at MayPort-CG last night, host Fisher-Climax next Thursday (Dec. 2
